Vent parameters

Change one parameter for one reason, then reassess.

Oxygenation knobs

  • FiO₂ increases delivered oxygen concentration.
  • PEEP recruits/maintains alveoli but can impair venous return or worsen RV failure.

Ventilation knobs

  • RR and VT determine minute ventilation.
  • Flow and inspiratory time affect I:E and air-trapping risk.

Safety knobs

  • Alarms should be set intentionally: high pressure, low volume, apnea, disconnect, and minute ventilation alarms.
