Vent modes

Choose the mode by what variable the ventilator controls and what the patient needs.

Volume controlSet VT and RR; pressure varies.Pressure controlSet pressure and inspiratory time; volume varies.PRVC / VC+Targets volume using pressure adjustments.

How to think about modes

  • Volume modes guarantee a set volume but pressures change with resistance/compliance.
  • Pressure modes limit pressure but delivered volume changes with mechanics.
  • Spontaneous/support modes require patient effort and are not the default for paralyzed/apneic patients.
